01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
A short walk from the north exit of Ogikubo Station, Gansozushi holds onto the classic custom of verbal ordering, handing freshly shaped sushi straight across the counter even in an era dominated by touchscreens. Speaking directly with the sushi chefs standing in the center gives the counter seats an enduring, easygoing appeal. The compact, light rice portions make it effortless to sample widely, fitting smoothly into a brisk workday lunch or a relaxed solo meal on the way back from errands.
Clear Price Tiers from Daily Staples to Bluefin Tuna
The backbone of the menu is the 125 yen (plus tax) tier, boasting more than 60 selections. Everyday favourites are comprehensively represented, from standards like tuna, salmon, and yellowtail to shiny silver-skinned fish such as cured mackerel, horse mackerel, and sardine, alongside familiar rolls like tekka-maki and kappa-maki. When you want something richer, the tiers step up flexibly to suit tastes and budgets: 160 yen (plus tax) for salmon belly or flounder; 200 yen (plus tax) for prime bluefin lean meat or Kurose yellowtail; and 380 yen (plus tax) for deluxe medium fatty tuna or overflowing sea urchin. Listed menu prices exclude tax and are subject to change.
Rounding Out the Meal with Warm Bowls and Drinks
A warm accompaniment makes an ideal interlude between bites of nigiri, whether that means handmade chawanmushi or an assortment of miso soups including clam soup, crab soup, and seaweed soup. Adding a steaming bowl filled with savoury ingredients lends satisfying depth even to a quick meal. Draft beer, bottled beer, chilled unpasteurised sake, and warm sake are also on hand, making it easy to wind down the day with a few plates and a drink at dusk. Beyond counter dining, takeout is also available, keeping this station-side counter a dependable stop whenever you crave unpretentious sushi.
